Best Rooftop Bars in Kathmandu (2026): Views, Cocktails & Vibes
April 15, 2026 · Kata Jaam? Team
Kathmandu was built for rooftops. The valley floor is flat, buildings are low, and on a clear post-monsoon night you can see everything from the neon of Thamel Chowk to the snow line of the Langtang range. These are the rooftop bars we'd send any visitor — or anyone local who hasn't been paying attention — to first.
Thamel rooftops
- Fat Monk's Rooftop Bar — arguably the best cocktail program in Thamel; the view opens right over Thamel Chowk. Good for dates, decent for groups.
- The Address Lounge — polished, spacious seating, valley-wide panorama. Slightly pricier but consistent.
- Bimba — plant-heavy, chill music, unpretentious. Good for a long slow evening rather than a big night out.
- Sky Lounge — busier, DJ-led, tourist-heavy. Packed on weekends.
- Sam's Bar Rooftop — the old guard; unchanged for twenty years and better for it.
Jhamsikhel rooftops
- Moksh — the only rooftop in the valley that consistently programmes live jazz. Intimate, beautiful on clear nights.
- Sunset Café & Bar — exactly what the name suggests. Arrive before golden hour.
- Top of the World — laptop-friendly by day, cocktail-friendly by night.
Boudha & Patan rooftops (for the views)
- Stupa View Restaurant — the rooftop every first-time visitor goes to, for good reason: the stupa circle below at dusk is unreal.
- Ananda Treehouse Café — Boudha, panoramic stupa view, bookshelves-and-lounge-chairs vibe.
- Café du Temple / Casa Pagoda / Yala Café (Patan Durbar Square) — sunset over the temple skyline beats any neon-lit skyline in the city. See our Patan after dark guide.
When to go
- Pre-monsoon (Mar–May) — warm evenings, occasional dust haze.
- Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) — clearest skies of the year. Book ahead.
- Winter (Dec–Feb) — covered rooftops only; many outdoor ones close.
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep) — storms come fast. Check our rainy day guide for indoor options.
Practical tips
- Cover charges — most rooftops don't charge cover but enforce a minimum spend on weekends.
- Reservations — worth doing at Fat Monk's, Moksh, and Stupa View for Friday and Saturday.
- Sunset timings — year-round, sunset in Kathmandu falls between 5:30 PM and 6:45 PM. Get there 30 minutes early.
Tonight's rooftop events
