Best Rooftop Bars in Kathmandu (2026): Views, Cocktails & Live Music
April 15, 2026 · Kata Jaam? Team
Kathmandu was built for rooftops. The valley floor is flat, buildings are low, and on a clear post-monsoon evening you can see everything from the neon of Thamel Chowk to the snow line of the Langtang range. Add a cocktail in hand, the right music, and a view that's been here for centuries — and you have one of the better evening formats in South Asia.
This guide pulls together the rooftops worth your time, by neighbourhood, including which ones reliably programme live music, which work best for dates, and which to skip on weekends.
Thamel rooftops
Thamel is dense and loud, but the rooftops are where the neighbourhood is at its most photogenic.
- Fat Monk's Rooftop Bar — arguably the best cocktail programme in Thamel; the view opens right over Thamel Chowk. Good for dates, decent for groups, packed on weekends.
- The Address Lounge — polished, spacious seating, valley-wide panorama. Slightly pricier but consistent. Reservations help on Friday and Saturday.
- Bimba — plant-heavy, chill music, unpretentious. Good for a long slow evening rather than a big night out. Often has acoustic sets.
- Sky Lounge — busier, DJ-led, tourist-heavy. Packed on weekends; arrive before 9 PM if you want seating.
- Sam's Bar Rooftop — the old guard; unchanged for twenty years and better for it. Cheap beer, pool table, backpacker-friendly.
- Roof Café — more bar than club; does live music on weekends and the occasional weeknight. Mountain view on clear days.
Typical Thamel rooftop pricing: cocktails 500–900 NPR, beers 350–450 NPR. Most don't charge cover but enforce a minimum spend on weekends.
Jhamsikhel rooftops
If Thamel is for tourists, Jhamsikhel is where the locals end up. The rooftops here are smaller, more curated, and far more likely to have a live jazz or acoustic set in progress.
- Moksh — the only rooftop in the valley that consistently programmes live jazz. Intimate, beautiful on clear nights, the music selection is genuinely thoughtful. Drinks 600–900 NPR, cover 200–400 NPR on live nights.
- Sunset Café & Bar — exactly what the name suggests. Arrive before golden hour. Co-working space by day, drinks by night.
- Top of the World — laptop-friendly by day, cocktail-friendly by night. Lower-key than Moksh, less of a music programme but consistently good.
- House 5 — brunch café that morphs into a wine bar in the evening. Best as a transition spot before moving on.

Boudha & Patan rooftops (for the views)
The Thamel and Jhamsikhel rooftops are about cocktails and atmosphere. Boudha and Patan are about views you simply can't get anywhere else.
- Stupa View Restaurant — the rooftop every first-time visitor to Boudha goes to, for good reason: the stupa circle below at dusk is unreal. Especially good when the butter lamps come on.
- Ananda Treehouse Café — Boudha, panoramic stupa view, bookshelves-and-lounge-chairs vibe.
- Café du Stupa / Boudha Stupa Restaurant & Café — alternative views of the kora; less famous, often quieter.
- Café du Temple / Casa Pagoda / Yala Café (Patan Durbar Square) — sunset over the temple skyline beats any neon-lit panorama in the city. See our Patan after dark guide.
Rooftops with live music
If you specifically want live music with your rooftop drinks, the most reliable options:
- LOD (Thamel) — Lord of the Drinks has one of the most active rooftop DJ and live music programmes in the city. Three floors, live music on the lower level, DJ on the rooftop. Fridays and Saturdays are the main live nights. Cover 300–500 NPR.
- Moksh (Jhamsikhel) — jazz, acoustic, and singer-songwriter sets. Smaller and more intimate than LOD, better music, worse for dancing.
- Roof Café (Thamel) — live music on weekends and occasional weeknights; the mountain view is a bonus.
- 1905 Rooftop (Kantipath) — boutique hotel rooftop, upscale. Occasional jazz and classical performances, more event-specific than the above.
- Dwarika's Heritage Terrace (Battisputali) — the most beautiful outdoor setting in Kathmandu — restored heritage property with candlelit terraces and regular live classical and folk music evenings. Special-occasion pricing.

When to go (by season)
Kathmandu's rooftops are a seasonal pleasure.
- Pre-monsoon (Mar–May) — warm evenings, occasional dust haze. Still comfortable on most rooftops.
- Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) — the clearest skies of the year and the most-photographed Himalayan views. Book ahead on weekends.
- Winter (Dec–Feb) — covered rooftops only; many outdoor ones close or operate at half capacity. Bring a jacket.
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep) — storms come fast and rooftops empty fast. Indoor venues are a better bet — see our rainy-day guide.
Sunset timings (year round)
Sunset in Kathmandu falls between 5:30 PM and 6:45 PM year-round, depending on the season. The 30-minute window before sunset is when the city looks its best from a height. Arrive early; the good seats go fast.
Reservations & pricing notes
- Cover charges — most rooftops don't charge cover. Live-music venues (LOD, Moksh, 1905) often do, NPR 200–500.
- Minimum spends — common on weekends; usually one drink per person per hour.
- Reservations worth making — Fat Monk's, Moksh, Stupa View, and Dwarika's Heritage Terrace for Friday and Saturday.
- Dress code — nothing strict, but smart casual works everywhere.
- Cash vs card — most accept both. Smaller bars sometimes cash-only.
Group of 4+? A rooftop crawl works.
Kathmandu doesn't have club districts the way Bangkok or Mumbai do, but a rooftop crawl across neighbourhoods reliably makes a great night. A classic route:
- Sunset in Jhamsikhel — Moksh or Sunset Café, drinks before the dark sets in.
- 8–10 PM in Thamel — Fat Monk's or Bimba; live music if Roof Café or LOD has a set on.
- Late at LOD or Sky Lounge — DJ-led, dance-floor, packed.
A Pathao or InDrive between neighbourhoods runs NPR 200–400.
