Rainy Day Kathmandu — 20 Indoor Things to Do During Monsoon

April 15, 2026 · Kata Jaam? Team

The Kathmandu monsoon (June through September) is unpredictable — sunny mornings, afternoon downpours, and the occasional four-hour deluge that cancels everyone's plans. The hills disappear into cloud, the river ghats fill, and the alleys flood briefly before draining. For three months, the city slows down and turns inward.

This is the playbook of indoor things to do when the weather turns. The valley is full of museums, galleries, climbing gyms, workshops, theatres, and rainy-day cafés that don't show up on tourist itineraries.

Museums worth your time

  • National Museum of Nepal (Chhauni) — Nepal's biggest, covering everything from natural history to ancient sculpture, weapons, and the royal collection. Worth a full half-day. Entry NPR 500 for foreigners.
  • Patan Museum (Patan Durbar Square) — widely considered the best-curated museum in the valley. Focused on traditional Nepalese art and metalwork. Garden courtyard café for the rain breaks. Entry NPR 1,000.
  • Taragaon Museum (Boudha) — smaller, architecturally beautiful, often hosts cultural events alongside its permanent exhibits.
  • Kaiser Library (Thamel) — inside Garden of Dreams; old, quiet, charming. Free with Garden of Dreams entry.
  • Narayanhiti Palace Museum (Durbarmarg) — the former royal palace, frozen in time. Entry NPR 500.
  • Hanumandhoka Palace Museum (Basantapur) — heritage palace complex, several museums under one ticket.

Art galleries

Openings tend to be free and often serve drinks. A rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse.

  • Siddhartha Art Gallery (Babar Mahal) — Nepal's most established contemporary art gallery.
  • Nepal Art Council (Babar Mahal Revisited) — the largest exhibition space in Kathmandu.
  • Park Gallery (Pulchowk) — strong painting and sculpture programme.
  • Image Ark (Kupondole) — photography and mixed-media.
  • Photo.Circle (Naxal) — Nepal's leading photography gallery and education centre.

See art events for current openings.

Active indoor options

  • Astrek Climbing Gym (Thamel) — two tall lead walls plus bouldering. Beginner-friendly routes available. Day pass NPR 600.
  • Climb the Wall (Battisputali) — alternative climbing gym; quieter and more local.
  • Futsal — arenas across Kathmandu and Lalitpur, bookable hourly NPR 1,500–3,000.
  • Squash courts — a few scattered around the city, typically attached to clubs.
  • Bowling & arcade — at shopping centres like Labim Mall and Civil Mall.

See sports events for leagues and matches that welcome walk-ins.

Workshops & classes

Monsoon is peak workshop season. Most happen at weekends at small studios:

  • Pottery (Bhaktapur and Thimi are the classic centres; weekend day-classes are common).
  • Thangka painting — Patan and Boudha studios run multi-session courses.
  • Wood carving — Bhaktapur cooperatives.
  • Cooking classes — Nepali, Newari, Tibetan. Most last 2–3 hours and end with eating what you made.
  • Photography workshops — Photo.Circle and Image Ark run regular intensives.
  • Yoga teacher training — Boudha is the global hub; multi-day intensives run year-round.

Long café sessions

Many of Kathmandu's best cafés are designed for long stays — reliable Wi-Fi, power outlets, and comfortable seating. For our full list see best cafés in Kathmandu for working.

A few cafés that are particularly excellent on rainy days:

  • Bodhi Books & Bakes (Thamel) — bookshelves, exposed brick, the kind of place built for a long afternoon.
  • Red Mud Coffee (Jhamsikhel) — windows over trees; rain sounds carry beautifully.
  • Utpala Café (Boudha) — monastery-owned, rooftop view of the stupa in mist.
  • Café du Temple (Patan) — Durbar Square views in the rain are oddly perfect.

Cinema

  • QFX Cinemas is the main chain in Kathmandu, with branches in Durbarmarg, Kupondole, and Labim Mall. Nepali, Hindi, and Hollywood films. Tickets run NPR 300–500.
  • Civil Mall Cinema — alternative chain, slightly cheaper.
  • Independent screenings — Yala Theatre and a few cultural centres run art-house and Nepali indie films. See cultural events.

Yoga & wellness

Monsoon is the traditional ayurvedic cleansing season. Many yoga centres in Jhamsikhel, Patan, and Boudha run indoor sessions year-round.

  • Pranamaya Yoga (multiple branches) — Iyengar, vinyasa, restorative classes.
  • Patanjali Yoga Kendra (Boudha) — traditional Hatha and ashtanga.
  • Utpala Café yoga sessions (Boudha) — gentle morning classes with a meditative bent.

See wellness & education events.

Eating well in the rain

The monsoon is peak season for hot, soupy food.

  • Jhol momo — Ghangri Café (Jhamsikhel) is the canonical; see our best momo places guide.
  • Thukpa — Tibetan noodle soup; best in Boudha and Thamel.
  • Thenduk — hand-pulled noodle soup; Yangling and Big Mountain Tibet Café are reliable.
  • Newari samay baji — perfect for a long sit-down meal.
  • Dal bhat power — the national staple; warming, filling, and unbeatable in the rain.

Cultural performances

Smaller theatres run indoor productions year-round.

  • Mandala Theatre (Anamnagar) — Nepali and English productions.
  • Shilpee Theatre (Battisputali) — experimental and classical.
  • Theatre Village (Hattisar) — varied programming.

See cultural events for what's running.

Escape rooms & games

Kathmandu now has several escape room venues — good for groups of 4–8 on a rainy afternoon. Most charge NPR 500–800 per person. Check community events for one-off game nights and tournaments.

Spas and traditional treatments

A rainy monsoon afternoon is perfect for a traditional Ayurvedic treatment. Tranquility Spa (Lazimpat), Dwarika's Spa (Battisputali), and a growing number of Patan spas offer abhyanga, shirodhara, and other classical treatments. Expect NPR 2,500–6,000 for a single session.
