The Best Momo Places in Kathmandu (A Local's Guide, 2026)

April 15, 2026 · Kata Jaam? Team

Momos are Kathmandu's unofficial national dish — the one food nearly every family, office, and neighbourhood has strong opinions about. A plate typically runs NPR 80–250 depending on the place. Steamed, fried, pan-fried, soupy (jhol), open-topped, kothey, C-momo, chilly momo — the variations have multiplied to the point that "best momo in Kathmandu" is genuinely contestable.

Here's our rundown of where to actually eat them, by style and by neighbourhood, with notes on what to order and what to avoid.

The classic steamed momo

The original. Eight to ten dumplings in a bamboo steamer, served with a tomato-and-sesame achar (chutney). Pork, chicken, buff, or paneer fillings.

  • Ram Dai ko Momo Pasal — a Thamel institution. Cramped, cheap, and consistently the reference point locals use to judge others. Buff is the move.
  • Shandar Momo — large, slightly thicker wrappers, perfect for dipping. Multiple branches across the city.
  • Kathmandu Momo Station — reliable in multiple neighbourhoods, good for a group with mixed preferences.
  • Bhojan Griha-style hotel momos — fine-dining version, paired with traditional Nepali courses.
  • Hotel Vajra (Bijeswari) — old-school heritage hotel momos; surprisingly good.

Jhol momo (the soupy legend)

Jhol momo is momos served in a spicy sesame-tomato broth — invented in Kathmandu and still best eaten here. The good versions are aromatic enough that you can find the shop by smell.

  • Ghangri Café (Jhamsikhel) — the open-top jhol momo here is widely considered the best in the valley. Served with peanut and mint chutneys on the side. NPR 350–400 per plate.
  • GG Machaan — steamy, aromatic, consistently recommended.
  • Newa Momo — a newer entrant with strong jhol broth.
  • Bota Café (Sanepa) — quieter but excellent.

Buff momo (Newari classic)

Buff (water buffalo) is the original meat for momos in Kathmandu. Look for places where it's freshly minced.

  • Honacha (Patan Durbar Square) — Newari buff momos at the square; family-run, no-frills, perfect.
  • Ram Dai ko (Thamel) — see above; the buff here is the move.
  • Lazimpat bhattis — several traditional Newari spots serve buff momo with chhoyla and bara. Look for places without English signage.

Paneer and vegetarian momos

The vegetarian momo scene used to be an afterthought; it's caught up.

  • Bagmati Sweets — the paneer momo here punches above its weight.
  • Thulo Momo (Boudha) — giant-size vegetarian momos across from the stupa. Worth the trip if you're already in Boudha.
  • Utpala Café (Boudha) — vegetarian-only, monastery-owned, excellent.
  • OR2K (Thamel) — wide vegetarian and vegan menu including momos.

Pan-fried (kothey) and fried (open) momos

  • Kothey Momo at Imago — crisp-bottomed, juicy interior; among the best in Lalitpur.
  • Steamed-then-fried at Shandar branches — a reliable mid-range option.
  • Open-fried momos at most street stalls — best as a late-night snack.

C-momo and chilly momo

The Indo-Chinese cousin. C-momo (chilly momo) is steamed momos tossed in a hot soy-and-chilli sauce.

  • Kathmandu Momo Garden — strong c-momo programme.
  • Multiple Chinese-Nepali restaurants in Baneshwor and Kupondole do solid versions.

Fusion & fine-dining

  • Kathmandu Grill (Thamel) — fine-dining take with refined presentation.
  • Societe Lounge Bar (Hattisar) — pasta momos, which shouldn't work but does.
  • Dwarika's Restaurant — the upscale traditional version; served as part of larger thali.

When to eat momos

Best times are late afternoon (3–5 PM) when shops are fresh for the evening rush, and late night (after 9 PM) when Thamel stalls fire up again. Avoid lunch rush (12–2 PM) if you don't want to queue. Saturday evenings are the busiest.

What to order with momos

  • Jhol momo + side rice — surprisingly good combination at Ghangri.
  • Steamed buff + Khukri rum — classic local pairing.
  • Kothey + Everest beer — pan-fried hits beer especially well.
  • Pork momo + lemongrass tea — palate-cleansing.

Food events & momo festivals

Kathmandu hosts momo festivals throughout the year, usually in late autumn. See food events for upcoming ones. For pop-up supper clubs and chef's tables, filter by food category and sort by date.

The biggest annual events:

  • Kathmandu Momo Festival (usually November) — 30+ vendors, multi-day.
  • Newari Food Festival (around Mha Puja, November) — momo-and-thali bundles.
  • Thamel Food Walk (occasional) — momo-focused versions run during peak season.

Order like a local

  • "Aath gota momo, achar dhayre" — eight momos, lots of chutney.
  • "Jhol momo, kam khursani" — jhol momo, less chilli.
  • "Steam ko ramro" — steamed is best (a polite ranking request).
