Are theatre shows in Kathmandu performed in Nepali or English?

Most natak at Mandala and Shilpee are staged in Nepali, including original works and Nepali translations of world classics. English-language productions and bilingual pieces do come up, especially during festivals like NITFest or when visiting companies tour. Each event listing notes the language where the organiser has provided it.

How do I book tickets for a play in Kathmandu?

Ticketed productions link straight through to Khalti, TicketSanjal or eSewa from the event page. Many theatre runs also sell at the box office an hour before showtime — popular weekend shows and festival nights sell out, so booking online ahead is the safer bet.

When is the theatre season busiest in Kathmandu?

There is live theatre most weeks of the year, but the calendar peaks around festivals — the Nepal International Theatre Festival (NITFest) and other seasonal drama festivals pack in productions, workshops and touring companies over a concentrated run. This page updates daily so you can catch what is on stage right now.

Theatre & Drama (Natak) Shows in Kathmandu

Kathmandu keeps a living stage running all year. Mandala Theatre in Anamnagar and Shilpee Theatre near Battisputali anchor the scene, staging original Nepali natak, adaptations of world drama, and festival runs like NITFest that pull in companies from across the country and abroad. This page tracks what is actually on stage right now — productions, one-night performances and full festival lineups, with venues, dates and tickets.

Theatre here overlaps closely with the wider arts calendar. If a particular run has wrapped, browse cultural events and art events across the valley, or see the full list of things to do in Kathmandu.

Frequently asked questions

Mandala Theatre sits in Anamnagar, roughly ten minutes on foot from the Bhrikutimandap / Ratnapark area in central Kathmandu. It is easy to reach by taxi, Pathao or InDrive — ask for Anamnagar Chowk and it is a short walk down the lane from there. Shilpee Theatre, the valley's other major stage, is over in Battisputali near the Gaushala side, so double-check the venue named on each listing before you set off.
