Losar 2026 in Kathmandu: Events & Things to Do

Losar is the Himalayan New Year — celebrated in three waves in Nepal: Tamu Losar by the Gurung community (late December), Sonam Losar by the Tamang (February), and Gyalpo Losar by Sherpa and Tibetan communities (late February to March). Boudha and Swayambhu fill with prayer flags, masked cham dances and community feasts.

Losar peaks in December, and in 2026 the main day falls on Wednesday, 30 December 2026. Because it moves with the calendar each year, the surrounding events — dinners, concerts, cultural nights and parties — tend to appear in the weeks just before.
