Holi Parties in Kathmandu

Holi is the one festival Kathmandu celebrates almost entirely as a ticketed event. While Basantapur Durbar Square draws the free street crowd, the real day out is at the pool and rooftop parties — venues like AquaKuno and the Carpe Diem–style resort spots turn their pools into rain-dance floors, wheel in foam cannons and water sprinklers, and put a DJ on from late morning. Colour, water and bass, all afternoon.

Holi (Phagu Purnima) lands on 2 March 2027 in Kathmandu and the hills. The big parties sell out fast and every confirmed one shows up below with its venue and ticket link. Browse the full Nepali festival calendar or see where the party goes on DJ nights.

What to expect at Holi in Kathmandu

There are two ways to do Holi in the valley. The free version is the street celebration around Basantapur and Thamel — spontaneous, crowded, and joyfully chaotic, with water balloons (lola) coming off balconies and colour flying everywhere. It's the most authentic way to experience the festival, but it's rowdy and unpredictable.

The ticketed version is the pool and rooftop party circuit, and it's where most of Kathmandu's younger crowd ends up. Expect a single entry point, a controlled venue, a proper sound system, and everything geared around one long rain-dance session: foam, water jets, colour zones and a DJ running the floor from late morning into the afternoon. Tickets usually bundle entry with unlimited water and dance; food and the bar are separate or on a higher tier. If you want the fun without the street mayhem, this is the calmer, more controlled option.

Whichever you pick: wear white or clothes you can throw away, oil your skin and hair first, waterproof your phone, and pack dry clothes for the ride home.
